CHAPTER 17

“See the man to a barred cell and the girl to her own. Have them both cleaned and prepared for display at the feast this night. I will see this settled before sunrise.” With a turn and wave of his hand the slaves and guards were issued their commands.

Guards took Cassian by either arm before dragging him from the room while Violetta’s eyes followed him, mournful and afraid of what was going to happen next and even more so of what would happen that night. His eyes held the silent apology of his heart, the tears in her eyes like daggers to his heart as he was roughly gripped on each arm and dragged from the room and her sight.

Whatever future awaited them was not now in the hands of the fates, but in the mood of a Roman who had no reason to spare his life besides his prowess in the arena. He found himself overwhelmed with the feeling of dread and the unfamiliar sensation of fear. How many times over the long count of years had he raised hand or voice against those that sought to dominate him? Precious few, so why did he do this now? All his training, his strength and endurance had given him nothing, nothing to prepare him for the sight of the woman he loved being struck and accosted by the man who took pleasure in assaulting her for no other reason than that she did not want him.

He glanced over his shoulder to see the third guard approach Violetta. He was relieved when she started to walk so that he had no excuse to touch her. The misery seeping through her every pore was palpable and he watched her begin to spiral into misery that would soon consume every thought.

Cassian wondered how many times she and all the others had ignored the arduous cries from Irissa’s cell as she had lain with any man who would have her, including more than one guard. There had even been times in the kitchen while she was preparing Dominus’ meal that she had set the task aside to see to her own desires. All these things had been hidden in good faith and yet one public kiss between himself and Violetta had her breaking words of it to Dominus as though a crime had been committed. If only there was a chance for revenge upon the vile woman but even words with her were to be denied as the day was now to be spent in solitude, dreading what plans Felix would devise for their punishment.
